Textured wallpaper has quietly become the most requested finish in our Deira showroom this year, and it is not hard to see why. After a decade of bold pattern, the mood across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider GCC has shifted towards surfaces that are felt rather than announced — linen weaves, fine grasscloth effects, soft plaster looks and plains with a shadow in them. This is the “quiet luxury” idea applied to walls: nothing shouts, everything reads as expensive. Below is how we specify it for designers, contractors and hotel projects, and what to watch for before you order.

What quiet luxury actually means on a wall
Quiet luxury is a material argument, not a colour scheme. It relies on three things: a restrained palette, a surface with genuine depth, and joinery-level neatness at the edges. A flat painted wall gives you the first and never the second. A heavily patterned paper gives you drama but dates faster. The middle ground — a plain or near-plain with real relief — is what most of our trade customers are now specifying for lobbies, majlis walls, bedroom feature walls and boutique retail.
The trick is that the texture has to survive the lighting. Gulf interiors are lit hard: recessed downlights, large glazed areas, strong afternoon sun. A weak embossing disappears by noon and looks like a slightly dirty paint job. A well-made weave or plaster effect does the opposite — it changes character through the day, which is exactly the effect clients pay for.
Why textured wallpaper outperforms flat paint
On paper, paint is cheaper. On a five-year view for a commercial space, textured wallpaper usually is not. Paint on gypsum shows every trowel mark, every knock from a trolley, and every patch repair. A vinyl or non-woven textured surface hides substrate imperfection, takes knocks far better, and can be cleaned. For hotel corridors and lift lobbies in particular, this is the whole business case.
There is also the acoustic and tactile dimension. Heavier textured papers take a fraction of the hardness out of a room with stone floors and glass — a common combination here. If you are already balancing hard surfaces, pairing a textured wall with the right upholstery and drapery fabrics does more for how a room feels than another layer of joinery.

The four texture families worth knowing
Almost everything in our plain and textured ranges falls into one of four groups, and each behaves differently on site.
Weaves and linen effects. The safest choice and the most forgiving. Cream, oat, taupe and soft grey dominate. Excellent for bedrooms, offices and any wall that has to sit behind artwork without competing. Brands such as Grandeco, Holden and Wallquest all run strong weave programmes.
Plaster and concrete effects. Slightly cooler, more architectural, and very good in double-height spaces where a flat colour would look empty. Zambaiti Parati and SK Filson do these particularly well.
Grasscloth and natural-fibre looks. The most tactile of the group. Genuine natural grasscloth has visible seams and colour variation by design — beautiful, but you must warn the client, because in a villa handover that variation gets logged as a defect if nobody explained it. Printed grasscloth effects avoid the argument entirely.
Metallics and mica. Used sparingly, these are what lift a scheme from calm to luxurious. A mica-flecked plain behind a bedhead or a reception desk reads far richer than its price suggests. Paper & Ink and Sellers & Josephson both have quiet metallic plains that work well in this climate.

Specifying textured wallpaper for hotels and fit-outs
For B2B work, three practical points come up on nearly every project. First, quantity: textured plains have very little pattern repeat, so wastage is low — usually 10% is enough, against 15–20% for a large-repeat pattern. Second, batch: order the full quantity in one batch, including your attic stock. On a plain, a batch difference is more visible than on a busy pattern, not less. Third, lead time: for stocked ranges we deliver across the UAE in three to seven days, and we hold exclusive distribution for our brands in the UAE, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain, so supply and reordering for a phased project stay in one place. For Saudi Arabia and India we welcome bulk enquiries, though availability varies by brand.
If you are specifying a full scheme, it is worth pulling the wall, fabric and floor together at the same meeting. Our Adore LVT flooring range was chosen partly because its warm woods and stones sit comfortably under this kind of neutral wall without fighting it.
Getting the installation right in UAE conditions
More textured wallpaper jobs are ruined by preparation than by product. Our standing advice to contractors here:
- Let the substrate dry properly. New gypsum and fresh skim in a Dubai summer need longer than the programme usually allows.
- Prime the wall. An unprimed porous skim drinks the paste and you get open seams within weeks.
- Use a quality adhesive matched to the backing — we supply ACM adhesive from Italy for exactly this reason, and it is what we recommend for non-woven and heavy vinyl textures.
- Keep the air conditioning running, but not blasting onto a freshly hung wall. Rapid drying at a seam is the most common cause of curling.
- Reverse-hang alternate drops on plains where the manufacturer advises it, to cancel out any shading across the wall.
- Handle the seams with a roller, never a hard scraper — on an embossed surface a scraper flattens the texture and leaves a permanent shiny line.
Where to see it properly
Texture is the one thing that never photographs honestly. A weave that looks flat on a phone screen can be the most interesting surface in the room in daylight, and the reverse is just as true. If you are working on a scheme, come and handle the books — the difference between three cream plains is obvious in your hand and invisible online. Many of the collections we carry, including ranges from Wallquest, are supplied here under exclusive regional distribution.
Our showrooms are in Deira, Dubai and in Sharjah, and both hold the current sample books. You can also browse the full wallcovering collection online, or contact us for trade pricing and bulk enquiries — we have been supplying designers, contractors and hotels across the region since 1974, and we are happy to put a sample set together for a specific project.
