Wallquest Alice & Rose Charmaine Fabric (VI83911F) — Decor Establishment Dubai

Choosing curtain fabric in Dubai is not quite the same exercise as choosing it in London or Milan. The light here is harder, the glare lasts longer, and a fabric that looks beautiful on a roll in an air-conditioned showroom can look tired within two summers if the weight, the lining and the colour were not thought through. We have supplied fabrics to designers, contractors and homeowners across the Emirates since 1974, and the questions we are asked most often come down to three things: how heavy, how lined, and what colour will survive.

Why curtain fabric in Dubai has a harder job

Three things work against textiles in the Gulf, and they work together rather than separately.

The first is ultraviolet light. Direct sun through glass fades dyes unevenly — the leading edge of a curtain that sits in a sunbeam will go before the rest of the drop does. Deep reds, bright blues and strong greens show this first. Soft neutrals, taupes, sand tones and warm greys show it last, which is one reason so many villa schemes here settle into that palette rather than simply following fashion.

The second is heat gain. A west-facing window in June is a radiator, so curtains are part of your cooling strategy whether you intended them to be or not. A lined, generously gathered curtain does measurably more for comfort than an unlined one.

The third is dust. Fine sand works into weaves, particularly open ones, and dulls the surface. Tighter weaves shed it more readily.

Weight: how much fabric the window actually needs

Weight is the first decision, because it settles the look as much as the performance, and it is where most curtain fabric in Dubai gets chosen badly.

Light weights — voiles, muslins, loose linens — hang softly and let light through. They are a layer, not a solution: on their own they will not stop glare or heat, but they soften both.

Medium weights — cotton blends, textured weaves, most printed cloths — are the workhorses. They drape properly, take a lining well, and suit the majority of villa and apartment windows in the UAE.

Heavy weights — velvets, jacquards, heavy damasks — block light, absorb sound and give a room formality. They need a track rated for the load and a deeper stack-back allowance, which matters if your window sits close to a corner.

One rule holds across all three: fullness matters more than people expect. A curtain made at twice the width of the window will always look better than the same cloth made flat, so if budget is tight, choose a slightly cheaper fabric and keep the fullness. Widths vary by collection — confirm the usable width before calculating metres.

Lining and blackout: the layer doing the real work

This is where most of the performance lives, and it is the part clients most often leave to the last minute.

A standard lining protects the face fabric from UV, improves the drape and gives the curtain body. For most rooms this is enough, and we treat it as the default rather than an upgrade.

An interlining — a soft layer between face and lining — adds insulation and that heavy, expensive-looking fall. Worth considering in a formal majlis or a west-facing sitting room.

Blackout lining blocks light almost entirely. In bedrooms it is close to essential here, because sunrise in summer arrives earlier than most people would like. Two cautions. It works only if the curtain is wide and long enough to overlap the reveal generously; one that stops at the window frame will leak light down both sides. And in a very sunny window the blackout layer takes the heat load itself, so a light-coloured lining will outlast a dark one.

Sheers, the majlis, and choosing room by room

The double-layer arrangement — a sheer behind, a heavier curtain in front — is popular across the Gulf for practical reasons rather than decorative ones. It gives you two settings: by day the sheer alone diffuses glare while keeping the room bright and private from the street; in the evening the main curtain closes over it. In a majlis this matters more than in most rooms, because the space is used across the whole day. A sheer in a warm off-white or pale sand tone flatters the light here; a cool blue-white can read grey once the sun is high.

Beyond that, orientation beats any general rule. Broadly, though:

  • Majlis — medium to heavy face cloth, interlined, sheer behind. Pattern works well; the room is large enough to carry it.
  • Bedroom — medium weight with blackout lining, generous side overlap, calm colour. Pair it with a quieter wall treatment; our bedroom wallpaper range shows what sits well alongside soft textiles.
  • Living and dining — medium weight, lined, in a tone that relates to the walls rather than matching them exactly. Matching is harder to get right than contrasting.
  • Study or home office — a sheer plus a medium curtain, so you can kill screen glare without working in the dark.
  • Stairwells and double-height glazing — lighter weights, because the drop is long and the load adds up. Take advice on the track before choosing the cloth.

A checklist before you order

  1. Measure the track or pole width, not the glass, and decide the finished drop.
  2. Note each window’s orientation — west and south-west windows drive the lining decision.
  3. Decide fullness first, then fabric, so the budget lands in the right place.
  4. Confirm the usable width of your chosen cloth before calculating metres.
  5. Choose the lining deliberately: standard, interlined or blackout, room by room.
  6. See the fabric in daylight, folded rather than flat.
  7. Order extra for pattern repeat and future repairs. Deliveries typically run three to seven days.

Choosing curtain fabric in Dubai with us

Most schemes work best when the fabric and the wallcovering are chosen in the same sitting rather than weeks apart. A textured plain wall gives a patterned curtain room to breathe; a patterned wall usually wants a plain, well-drawn curtain beside it. Our fabric collections are selected to sit alongside the wallcoverings we carry, including designs from houses such as Wallquest. If wallpaper is going up at the same time, specify the adhesive properly too — we supply ACM adhesive from Italy, which is what our own installers use.

Cloth is the one thing that does not translate through a screen. Weight and handle are decided in about four seconds once it is over your hand, never from a photograph — which is why we would always rather you came and chose curtain fabric in Dubai in person. You are welcome at our head office in Deira or our Sharjah branch, where the full fabric range sits alongside the wallcoverings. Browse online first and arrive with a shortlist if that is easier.

We hold exclusive distribution rights for our brands across the UAE, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain, and welcome bulk enquiries from elsewhere in the region, though availability varies by brand. For project quantities — hotels, fit-outs, multiple villas — our trade team quotes on volume. Get in touch with the rooms, the orientation and the handover date, and we will come back with options rather than a catalogue.
