In most Gulf homes the majlis is the room that does the talking. It is where guests are received, where business gets discussed over cardamom coffee, and where a family’s taste is quietly on display. That is exactly why majlis wallpaper has become one of the most requested finishes we supply across the UAE — it gives a reception room depth, warmth and a sense of occasion that flat paint simply cannot manage. Whether you are dressing a villa in Al Barsha, a family majlis in Sharjah or twelve identical suites for a hotel client, the same principles apply.

Why majlis wallpaper works harder than paint
A majlis is usually a large, high-ceilinged room with long uninterrupted walls and a lot of reflected light. Paint in that setting tends to look thin by mid-afternoon. A textured or patterned covering does three things at once: it adds tactile interest at close range, it holds colour consistently under both daylight and warm evening lighting, and it disguises the minor surface imperfections that show up badly on a big plastered wall.
There is a practical argument too. A good vinyl or non-woven wallcovering takes far more abuse than emulsion — shoulders brushing past, majlis cushions pushed up against the skirting, the annual pre-Ramadan deep clean. Wipeable finishes matter in a room that is used constantly and cleaned often.
Start with the seating plan, not the pattern
The classic mistake is choosing a design from a small swatch and only then thinking about the furniture. In a traditional majlis with perimeter seating, guests spend the evening looking at the wall opposite them, not the one behind their heads. Work out where the eye lands first, and put your strongest wall there.
For a modern living room with a central sofa arrangement, the feature wall is usually behind the main seating or framing the television. In both cases, measure the visible height above the sofa backs — if only 1.2 metres of wall is actually on show, a large-repeat damask will be cropped into nonsense.
Choosing scale and colour for a Gulf majlis
Scale is the single biggest decision when you are specifying majlis wallpaper. As a rough working rule:
- Rooms over 6 metres wide — large repeats, panoramic murals and bold damasks read beautifully. Small patterns disappear.
- Standard 4–5 metre reception rooms — mid-scale botanicals, textured plains and wide stripes give presence without crowding.
- Narrow or heavily furnished rooms — stay with grasscloth-effect textures, linens and tonal geometrics.
On colour, remember how much light a Gulf interior actually gets. Deep teals, olives, burgundies and warm charcoals that would feel oppressive in a European sitting room look rich and grounded here, especially against gold or brass detailing. If the majlis is used mostly after sunset under warm lighting, cool greys can turn muddy — test a full-drop sample on the wall before committing.

Five majlis wallpaper ideas that earn compliments
- The single mural wall. A hand-painted-style botanical or chinoiserie mural behind the main seating turns the majlis into a room people photograph. Murals are supplied as numbered panels, so they must be measured properly — send us the wall height and width and we will confirm the panel count.
- Texture everywhere, pattern nowhere. A grasscloth or linen-effect covering on all four walls is the quietly expensive look. It suits a majlis where the furniture, chandeliers and rugs are already doing the work.
- Damask in a dark colourway. Traditional, but a navy or forest damask with a subtle metallic ground avoids the dated feel of gold-on-cream.
- Panelled wallpaper. Set framed sections of patterned paper inside timber or gypsum mouldings and leave the surrounding wall plain. Very effective in formal majlis rooms, and it uses far fewer rolls.
- Ceiling as the fifth wall. A tonal texture on the ceiling above a seating cluster adds intimacy to a high room. Use a lighter colourway than the walls.
All five work with the collections in our wallcovering range, which includes Wallquest, Grandeco, Zambaiti Parati, SK Filson, Holden, Paper & Ink and Sellers & Josephson, plus the Elie Saab Maison and Automobili Lamborghini designer collections. You can see the full Wallquest design library on the manufacturer’s own site before narrowing down a shortlist with us.
Pulling in fabrics and flooring
A majlis rarely stands alone. Coordinating curtain and upholstery fabric to the wall is the fastest way to make a scheme look designed rather than assembled — several of our collections include matching fabrics for exactly this reason. Underfoot, Adore LVT is worth considering for majlis and hospitality projects: it handles heavy footfall, takes a wet clean, and is quiet in a room with hard surfaces. Our flooring range has the current colourways.

Installation: the part that decides how it looks in five years
Most wallpaper complaints in this region are not pattern problems — they are adhesive and preparation problems. Gulf walls move with heat, air conditioning cycles humidity constantly, and a paper hung onto dusty or freshly plastered gypsum will lift at the seams within a season.
Three things to insist on when your majlis wallpaper goes up: a fully cured, sealed and sanded wall; a hanging plan that centres the pattern on the focal wall rather than starting from a corner; and the right adhesive. We supply ACM adhesive from Italy with our wallcoverings because it holds heavy vinyls and non-wovens reliably in UAE conditions and gives installers enough open time to slide panels into alignment — which matters enormously with murals.
Ordering for homes, villas and hospitality projects
Decor Establishment has supplied the region’s wallpaper trade since 1974, and we hold exclusive distribution rights for our brands in the UAE, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain. For designers, contractors, hotel groups and wholesalers, that means dependable stock, consistent batch numbers across a phased project, and regional delivery in three to seven days. Bulk enquiries from Saudi Arabia and India are welcome too, though availability varies by brand.
Retail customers are just as welcome. Visit the showroom in Deira, Dubai or our Sharjah branch to see full drops in person, browse the collections online, or get in touch with the team for samples, quantities or a trade account. Send us your wall dimensions and we will tell you exactly how many rolls the job needs — before you fall in love with a design.
